Vich, Z., Novosad, F., and Brychtova', V. (1970). Brit. J. industr. Med., 27, 287-290. Erythrocytes of uranium miners: the activity of the pentose phosphate pathway. The functioning of erythrocytes was studied by determination of the activity of the pentose phosphate pathway in 431 individuals 221 uranium miners, 42 employees of a uranium ore trimming station (30 of whom were exposed), 36 former uranium miners, 32 coal miners, and 100 persons not working in mines and with no previous exposure. In the groups exposed to long-term occupational radiation, the activity of the pentose phosphate cycle was found to be enhanced. This finding was interpreted as evidence for a change in the functional state of the erythrocytes in exposed persons due to the effects of radiation on the genesis of red cells in the bone marrow.

Hemolytic anemia in hereditary pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency: nucleotide inhibition of G6PD and the pentose phosphate shunt.
We evaluated the erythrocytes of two patients with hereditary pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency. Significant findings included an increased reduced glutathione content, increased incubated Heinz body formation, a positive ascorbate cyanide test, and decreased intraerythrocytic pH. The pentose phosphate shunt activity of the patients' red cells as measured by the release of 14CO2 from 14C-1-...

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a cytosolic enzyme which its main function is to produce NADPH in the red blood cells by controlling the step from Glucose-6-Phosphate to 6-Phospho gluconate in the pentose phosphate pathway. G6PD deficiency is the most common X-chromosome linked hereditary enzymopathy in the world, that result in reduced enzyme activity and more than 125 different mu...
متن کاملSubstances stimulating glucose catabolism by the oxidative reactions of the pentose phosphate pathway in human erythrocytes.
Mature human erythrocytes possess the enzymes necessary to catabolize glucose to CO2 via pentose phosphate pathway or to lactic acid via the Embden-Meyerhof pathway. These cells are deficient in certain enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. In the non-nucleated red cells, the oxidative reactions of pentose phosphate pathway appear to be the sole mechanism for glucose conversion to CO2 and fo...
متن کاملInhibition of the pentose phosphate shunt by lead: a potential mechanism for hemolysis in lead poisoning.
Recent investigations have disclosed a decrease in pentose phosphate shunt activity in hereditary pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency. Clinical lead poisoning is associated with an acquired decrease in pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase activity. The current investigations were undertaken (1) to determine if pentose shunt activity was decreased in erythrocytes exposed to lead, and (2) to compare the ...
متن کاملClinical Studies on Glucose Metabolism via the Pentose Phosphate Pathway in Human Erythrocytes.
Glucose metabolism via the pentose phosphate pathway was studied by measuring accelerated 02 uptake of human erythrocytes in the presence of methylene blue. Erythrocyte 02 uptake was independent of age in 67 normal patients. Erythrocyte 02 uptake was increased in pernicious anemia in relapse and in 5 of 6 jaundiced patients but was normal in pernicious anemia in remission and in 20 cases of mal...
